Mathematics is the study of topics such as quantity (numbers), structure, space and change.

Grade 9
Students are required to choose both of the following math courses.
Mathematics 10F
This course is designed as a foundation course to prepare students for multiple pathways in grades 10 to 12. The purpose is to
engage students in thinking about and learning how to use mathematics.
Transitional Mathematics 10F
This course is designed to strengthen students’ understanding of concepts related to basic arithmetic. This includes mental
math and estimation strategies, operations on integers, percents with their relationship to decimals and fractions, solving
expressions and linear equations, as well as geometry and measurement.
Grade 10
Students are required to choose one of the following math courses; the other can be selected as an elective.
Essential Mathematics 20S
This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understanding and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into most of
the trades and for direct entry into the workforce. Consumer decisions which students will encounter in their future lives are examined.
Introduction to Applied and Pre-Calculus Mathematics
This course gives students an introduction to both the Applied and Pre-Calculus pathways offered in grade 11 and 12 mathematics. For this
course, students should feel confident with their basic integer and multiplication facts.
Grade 11
Students are required to choose one of the following math courses, others can be selected electives.
Essential Mathematics 30S
This course is intended for students whose post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science-related fields.
Applied Mathematics 30S
This course is intended for students considering post-secondary studies that do not require a study of theoretical calculus. It is context
driven and promotes the learning of numerical and geometrical problem-solving techniques as they relate to the world around us. Primary
goals are to develop critical thinking skills through problem-solving and model real-world situations mathematically to make predictions.
Pre-Calculus Mathematics 30S
This course is designed for students who intend to study Calculus and related mathematics as part of their post-secondary education. The
course comprises a high-level study of theoretical mathematics with an emphasis on problem-solving and mental mathematics.
Grade 12
Essential Mathematics 40S
Continuation of math studies intended for students whose post-secondary planning does not include a focus on mathematics and science-related fields.
Topics include analysis of games and numbers, vehicle finance, statistics, precision measurement, home finance, geometry and trigonometry,
business finance, probability, and career life.
Applied Mathematics 40S
This course is intended for students considering post-secondary studies that do not require a study of theoretical calculus. Graphing
calculators and/or computers are used for mathematical experimentation, modelling, and problem solving as students work with nonroutine problems and projects.
Pre-Calculus Mathematics 40S
This course is designed to prepare students for calculus and sciences in college and university. Topics include transformation
of functions, trigonometric functions, exponential functions, logarithmic functions, polynomial functions, radical functions,
rational functions, and the binomial theorem.
Grade 12 Math Elective - Intro to Calculus and Advanced Math Topics 40S
This course is scheduled for semester two and is designed to prepare students for university calculus.
